Nier Replication is a prequel to Nier Automata

Despite the fact that there are many games in the series, NieR: Automata is probably the most popular. Square Enix seems to have noticed that and is going to piggyback on the success of the NieR: Automata to bring some of the older games to a larger audience.

NieR Replicant, the game that started all out, made its debut back in Japan 10 years ago. This was one of the strangest releases as PlayStation 3 players would get to play a younger character, while Xbox 360 owners got NieR Gestalt, which featured the same protagonist but older.

In the West, on the other hand, only NieR Gestalt was released, but under a different name – NieR. The game can hardly be called a success, but those who liked the game were quite hardcore. Now that NieR: Automata became a smash hit, Square Enix decided to re-release the original game and allow fans of the series to experience the beginnings of the franchise.

The remaster has been named NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, a name that's hard to remember, so let's just call it NieR Replicant remaster. Square Enix believes that now is a great time for those who played the original to revisit it, while new fans will be able to how the series started back in 2010.

The Japanese publisher confirmed the remaster is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam. Also, the game will be developed in collaboration with Toylogic, a studio that includes director Yoko Taro (Drakengard / NieR: Automata), composer Keiichi Okabe (TEKKEN / Drakengard / NieR: Automata), and producer Yosuke Saito (Dragon Quest X / NieR: Automata).

Along with the announcement, Square Enix released a new trailer, but no details about what improvements we can expect. However, we do know the remaster will be released sometime this year, so there should be enough time to find out more about the project.
