As summer kicks off, fewer game releases happen

After five months with plenty of game releases, it’s finally time to take a well-deserved break and thin out that huge backlog of titles. Although we have much fewer releases in June than in any of the previous months, we do have some heavy hitters that will most likely keep us occupied for the entire month and probably beyond that.

Diablo 4, Final Fantasy XVI and Street Fighter 6 are clearly the stars of the month, games that many of us will play for months to come. Truth be told, I feel sorry for all the other games that are expected to be released in June because they will definitely not get the attention they deserve. If we add F1 2023 and MotoGP 23 into the mix, we get an even bleaker picture for the indie games that decided to go for a June launch.

That being said, if you’re one of the gamers not interested in any of these big hitters, there are still quite a few other games coming out in June 2023. As a matter fact, the first games set for release in June are scheduled for the first day of the month.

Developer ATLUS and publisher SEGA are expected to launch Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection on PC and Nintendo Switch on June 1. The bundle contains all three original games in HD format. Although these are not full remakes, if you haven’t played the JRPG series, this is probably a good time to pick these games up. The only problem is the rather prohibitive price: $80/€80. If you plan to purchase the game separately, the price is even higher as each game costs $40/€40.

Another game coming out on the same day, Killer Frequency shapes up to be quite an adventure. A first-person horror adventure at its core, Killer Frequency puts players in the shoes of a late-night radio host whose callers are being stalked by a mysterious killer. The game will launch on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

The first heavy hitter of the month, Street Fighter 6, is set for release on PC, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox Series X/S) on June 2. I don’t think this one needs any presentation since developer CAPCOM has already released many gameplay trailers and information about what fans should expect from the next instalment in the beloved series.

Two other games are scheduled to release on the same day as Street Fighter 6, Super Mega Baseball 4, which is coming to PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie coming to the same platforms.

If you’re an RPG fan, you should probably take a few days off starting June 6. Blizzard’s Diablo 4 will launch for PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on June 6, but depending on what version of the game you buy, you can play as early as June 4.

Loop8: Summer of Gods is an upcoming JRPG developed by Marvelous. Set in 1980s rural Japan, the game puts players in the shoes of a teen who must protect a town’s residents from an ever-present threat. If you’re not already playing Diablo 4 and rather go for this JRPG, keep in mind that it will come out on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on June 6.

Two days later, Milestone’s next game in the MotoGP series is expected to drop. MotoGP 23 launches for PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on June 8. If you’re fan of the Life is Strange franchise, you’ll be happy to know that DON’T NOD’s next project, Harmony: The Fall of Reverie, launches on June 8. Only the PC version of the game will be released at in the first part of the month, but a console version (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch) is expected to arrive on June 22.

Moving on to the next indie title, Greyhill Incident is a survival horror set for release on PC and PlayStation 4/5 on June 9. Cat simulator Heist Kitty: Multiplayer Cat Simulator Game is coming to PC on June 14. This is a sandbox game that encourages exploration, as it should since you’re playing as a cat.

Cinematic narrative adventure that tackles some serious LGBTQ+ topics, Goodbye Volcano High, is coming to PC and PlayStation 4/5 on June 15. Another interesting indie title, Fall of Porcupine, launches on the same day on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

Another heavy hitter, F1 2023, is slated for a June 16 release. The game will be available on just about every major platform, including PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S (sorry Nintendo Switch fans).

If you love games like Theme Park, you should keep your eyes on Park Beyond, another theme park simulation game that promises to give players the freedom to create and manage the parks of their dreams. Park Beyond launches for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on June 16.

We have a few more game releases before the last heavy hitter of the month drops. On June 20th, we have Crash Team Rumble (PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S) and Aliens: Dark Descent (PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S), while on the 21st, Trepang2 is expected to hit PC.

The last heavy hitter of the month, Final Fantasy 16, is expected to arrive on PlayStation 5 on June 22. The game will be exclusively available on Sony’s gaming console, but only for a limited time. A PC version is likely to be released too, but we have yet to learn when exactly.

The month ends with several indie games like Revival: Recolonization (Steam Early Access), Noob – The Factionless (PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch), Master Detective Archives: Rain Code (Nintendo Switch), Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch), Inner Ashes (PC, PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch), and Crime O'Clock (PC, Nintendo Switch), all coming out between June 28 and June 30.
