The Lord of the Rings fans probably can’t wait to get their hands on one of the not so many games that depicts their favorite universe and one of the weirdest creatures present in Tolkien’s saga, Gollum. Developed by Daedalic Entertainment, a studio mostly specialized in point & click adventures, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a story-driven action game with stealth elements.

Although we’ve seen several artwork pieces from the game, the first trailer featuring gameplay footage for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has just dropped. The footage shows Gollum using all of his cunning to sneak past enemies and traverse the vertical environments on his journey to reclaim his ‘precious.’

The game lacks combat, so Gollum will be limited to action that will not reveal it to enemies. One of the most maligned and misunderstood creature in all of Middle-earth, Gollum is cursed with dueling personalities and a constant compulsion to find the “ring.”

The game takes players on an exceptional journey, sharing a perspective unique to Gollum. The strange creature must adapt and move in the shadows if he is to evade enemies during his adventure. From the mountains of Mordor to the Mines of Moria, and passing through Mirkwood Forest, players will explore a variety of diverse environments and experience an enthralling narrative adventure.

The game is based on The Lord of the Rings trilogy of books by J.R.R. Tolkien, and tells of Gollum’s experiences from behind-the-scenes in the first chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring. After losing his precious ring to Bilbo Baggins, Gollum decides to leave the Misty Mountains and embark on a perilous journey across Middle-earth, where he encounters well-known characters from the books as well as new potential allies and antagonists.

It’s up to the players if they want Gollum to have the upper hand when making important decisions, or allow his Hobbit-self, Sméagol, to take over.

Announced back in 2019, the game is scheduled for release on September 1, 2022 and developer Daedalic Entertainment is targeting all platforms with the game, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The Nintendo Switch version of the game is planned for later this year too.
