Debian 9.13 is now available for the download as the last update for version 9, also known as Stretch, and as it happens every time, the changelog includes software improvements and security fixes.

Needless to say, this is a point release, and the Debian team emphasizes this is the final update in the entire series, which means that you are recommended to upgrade to Debian 10 as soon as possible.

“After this point release, Debian's Security and Release Teams will no longer be producing updates for Debian 9. Users wishing to continue to receive security support should upgrade to Debian 10, or see https://wiki.debian.org/LTS for details about the subset of architectures and packages covered by the Long Term Support project,” the team explains.

Of course, those who have already updated their devices using the security.debian.org mirror are almost up-to-date, so today’s release doesn’t change much.

However, it does include important bug fixes and security improvements, such as patches for memory corruption issues and memory leaks. It also resolves connection errors on TLS 1.2 that a number of users experienced when attempting to connect to certain hosting providers.

New versions of the included packages

As for the updated software, there are new versions of Chrome, Firefox, Thunderbird, and all the other packages that Debian comes with in the first place. Again, those who update their devices on a regular basis might already be running some of the updated apps here.

The Debian team reminds users this isn’t a new major release of Debian 9, but only a pack of patches.

“Please note that the point release does not constitute a new version of Debian 9 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no need to throw away old stretch media. After installation, packages can be upgraded to the current versions using an up-to-date Debian mirror,” they say.

Dedicated ISO images will also be published rather sooner than later.
