Some versions could be delayed, analyst says

Apple is projected to take the wraps off the new iPhones in September, but according to people familiar with the matter, a delay is very likely given the current health crisis.

And analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a very solid track on Apple scoops, explains that there’s a good chance this would happen, only that the Cupertino-based tech giant would embrace a different approach for this new iPhone generation.

So instead of pushing back one particular iPhone model, what the company could end up doing is just roll out the new devices one by one when they’re ready. This means Apple is likely to use a staggered release, or in waves, to push the new generation to the market.

Gradual rollout of new iPhones

Both the 6.1- and the 5.4-inch 2020 iPhones are projected to enter the mass production in September, which means they could be ready later the same month the earliest. This is also an indication that the initial inventory could be very constrained, so Apple is likely to go for a release calendar that reminds of the iPhone X - when the company announced the device in September but started the sales at a later time.

One particular challenge appears to be the brand-new 6.7-inch iPhone coming later this year, the analyst says, as Apple has encountered some issues with what is being described as the device’s “most complicated” design. What this means is still not clear, but this particular model could be pushed back even further if these issues aren’t resolved in a timely manner.

All iPhones this year will come with 5G support, and this new capability itself raises serious challenges for the Cupertino firm. Whether or not the company will manage to deal with them all before the September announcement is something that we will discover in just a few months.
