The famous survivor game Rust is finally leaving Steam Early Access after a staggering four years, most of which were spent as the undisputed king of unfinished games.

The term vaporware applies to games that were announced or teased, and never actually made it to production due to various reasons. Years would go by without anything happening, only to have the developer saying that they are still working on it.

On the other hand, it would be nice to apply the term vaporware to games that start their life straight from development, like the ones in Early Access, but never quite make it out. It could be easily applied to Rust, although, to be fair, the game is ready to become stable.

Rust was on top despite not being finished

Rust offered something new at the time of its launch, a survival experience that could be shared with other people online. It created a community of gamers focused on a single thing, to survive in a wasteland and to stay naked pretty much all of the time.

The domination of Rust in Steam, even while it was still in its development stages, is undisputed. This says something about its quality. And, if we take into account that Garry Newman is one of the designers, we know why it’s been successful.

“We plan to leave Early Access on the 8th February 2018. We're not planning any big reveals, launch parties, around the world tours or cash prize giveaways for this event. We're not going to move staff onto other projects. It's very much going to happen without much fuss. It's business as usual,” wrote Gary in a blog post.

Another reveal is that the team is transitioning from a weekly to a monthly update system because the developers from Facepunch Studios want to make sure that they’ll break the game with new stuff way less often.

Also, players should expect a price increase from $19.99 to $34.99. The fact that the developers announced this ahead of time means that there is still time to pick it up for the lower price.
