The plastic frame on the Surface Duo breaks already

The Surface Duo is without a doubt a premium device, and the living proof in this regard is nothing else than its price.

But on the other hand, a device that costs more than $1,000 should theoretically be pretty durable, and this is why manufacturers invest in new materials and typically turn to though Gorilla Glass, metal frames, and other solutions that could prevent physical damage.

Microsoft uses a plastic frame on the Surface Duo, and according to some users, not going for metal is already showing the anticipated shortcomings.

More specifically, some users who turned to reddit (via MSPU) claim the plastic around the USB-C port cracked and there’s obviously no way to fix it.

No wireless charging available

Surface Duo owners claim the whole thing happens without any specific pressure in that region, other than the typical charging via USB-C. So theoretically, the plastic could break when you insert the USB-C cable for charging, and some say they turned to solutions like vinyl wraps to protect the area.

Several users have already confirmed the same problem on their devices, and up until now, Microsoft is only said to be looking into all these cases, with no word on potential replacements. Most likely, the software giant will end up replacing all these faulty devices with new ones, though it goes without saying that the Surface Duo plastic breaking so fast isn’t by any means good news for potential buyers.

The bigger problem is that the Surface Duo doesn’t support wireless charging, so if you were thinking that you could avoid using a USB-C connector to protect the plastic around the port, you can’t do this.

We have reached out to Microsoft for more information on this problem and will update the article if and when we hear back from the company.
