The company trying to monetize the service more effectively

While the number of subscribers on Spotify is on the rise, the parent company is now testing a new subscription model that would provide users with some premium capabilities at a lower price.

Called Spotify Plus, this new subscription option is supposed to allow users to skip as many songs as they want every hour in exchange for still listening to ads.

At this point, the free version of Spotify supports skipping up to six songs per hour, so in theory, once someone gets the $0.99 subscription, this limitation would be lifted. At the same time, free users would also be allowed to listen to any song in an album or playlist, whereas the current version comes with an auto-shuffle mode.

At this point, however, everything is still in testing stage, and according to a Spotify statement for The Verge, this subscription model might not even be released if the company doesn’t receive enough positive feedback in this regard.

“We’re always working to enhance the Spotify experience and we routinely conduct tests to inform our decisions. We’re currently conducting a test of an ad-supported subscription plan with a limited number of our users,” Spotify has been quoted as saying.

No ETA just yet

At $0.99 per month, this Spotify subscription would become one of the most affordable on the market, way cheaper than the current $9.99 fee that full premium subscribers need to pay to get access to all features.

Spotify could therefore monetize the platform much more effectively, as the whole thing would be a double win for the company. Not only it’d make money out of subscriptions, but the advertising revenue would remain unchanged, as users would still have to listen to ads even if they purchase this subscription.

No information has been provided as to when the new subscription system could go live.
