Bug in watchOS 9 breaks down music streaming

watchOS 9 is live with so many improvements, including sleep tracking, so it’s no surprise that many users rushed to update their devices.

However, despite this growing excitement for a new Apple Watch update, Spotify tells its users to, well, wait. This is because the company is aware of a bug in watchOS 9 that breaks down the streaming, making its service unavailable.

“Apple watchOS 9 introduces a bug that will cause Spotify streaming on the Apple Watch to stop working. We encourage Spotify Apple Watch users to not install the watchOS 9 update until Apple implements a fix. Users already affected can instead download their content to their Apple Watch and listen offline or stream from their phones,” Spotify says.

Needless to say, Apple hasn’t yet confirmed that it’s working on a fix, though there’s a good chance it would be included in the very next watchOS update.

What’s new in watchOS 9

One of the biggest changes in the new OS version is the support for sleep tracking, something that helps the Apple Watch better compete with its rivals.

“The Sleep experience on Apple Watch already empowers users to create Wind Down and Bedtime schedules, as well as track their sleep to help them meet their goals. Sleep tracking in watchOS 9 provides even more insights with the introduction of sleep stages,” Apple says.

“Using signals from the accelerometer and heart rate sensor, Apple Watch can estimate when users are in REM, Core, or Deep sleep, and when they are awake. Users will see sleep stage data on Apple Watch in the Sleep app and can view more detailed information, like time asleep, alongside additional metrics, like heart rate and respiratory rate, in sleep comparison charts in the Health app on iPhone.”

watchOS 9 is available for the Apple Watch Series 4 and newer.
