Spotify says it abandoned plans for AirPlay 2 support due to compatibility issues

Spotify is a service whose userbase is continuously growing, and naturally, the parent company is working around the clock on bringing it to as many platforms as possible.

This is already paying off, as Spotify exists not only on mobile devices, but also on other smart devices and in the car, therefore letting users listen to their favorite music pretty much everywhere.

As part of these efforts to make Spotify available in as many places as possible, the parent company also planned to add support for AirPlay 2, which Apple introduced as part of iOS 11.4 back in May 2018.

Certainly, seeing Spotify not adding support after three years is a bit surprising, but what’s even more unexpected is that the company is now putting the development in this regard on hold.

Spotify still waiting for feedback

A company representative explained recently in a forum post that it’s all happening because of compatibility reasons, and while some believe the work in this regard would be resumed sooner or later, there’s little hope this would happen.

“We've discussed this Idea internally and while we are working on supporting AirPlay2 in a proper way, we have decided to close it for now. The reason for this is that due to audio driver compatibility issues, this seems like a bigger project that we won't be able to complete in the foreseeable future. Please keep adding your votes and comments here and as soon as we have anything new to share, we'll check back with an update,” the Spotify post reads.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Spotify wants to revert its decision and resume the work on this project, though the company explains that with the right feedback, such a thing could still happen. When this could be possible, however, is something nobody knows for sure.
