The terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed

SoundCloud has just announced a massive acquisition, as the company is getting ready to bet big on machine learning and artificial intelligence in the long term.

More specifically, SoundCloud will take over Musiio, a company that builds new-gen tools for the music industry, including B2B audio reference search.

And this is precisely what SoundCloud is interested in, as the company says it wants to upgrade its discovery engine with new-gen capabilities.

SoundCloud explains the benefits of integrating Musiio into its service:

“Musiio’s technology focuses on B2B audio reference search (AI that can “listen” to music), automated tagging, and playlisting tools for the music industry. By “listening” to more tracks than a human could ever comprehend and identifying characteristics and patterns, its AI allows users to better predict success, which in turn, can increase their ‘hit-rate’ and ultimately their revenue. With its leading product suite and by deeper integration with SoundCloud, Musiio will become core to SoundCloud’s discovery experience and help to identify talent and trends ahead of anybody else.”

All employees to join SoundCloud

Musiio is a new company, as it was founded in June 2018, so it ended up being taken over by one of the leading names in the music industry quite fast. And of course, this says a lot about the technology it has developed.

The financial terms of the deal haven’t been announced, but SoundCloud says all Musiio’s employees will join the company, with British CEO Hazel Savage and Swedish CTO Aron Pettersson to also remain part of the team.

“SoundCloud hosts more music from more creators than any platform on the planet. Acquiring Musiio accelerates our strategy to better understand how that music is moving in a proprietary way, which is critical to our success,” says Eliah Seton, President of SoundCloud. “We are honored to partner with Hazel and Aron and welcome the absolutely brilliant team of innovators at Musiio to the SoundCloud family.”
