Emperion Nebulus running Windows 10 on ARM, it seems

While Microsoft has killed off Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile and announced a Surface Duo dual-screen model running Android, a Windows phone per se still doesn’t exist, which means choosing a smartphone right now pretty much comes to picking either Android or iOS.

But a company called Emperion wants to change that with a new Windows phone that would also run Android apps, all without the need for an emulator or things like that. Or at least, that’s what the company promises.

Emperion teased the new phone on Twitter and only shared a few more details in a private discussion, explaining that the so-called Nebulus would come with Android app support at OS level. This means no other software or modifications would be required to run an Android app.

Microsoft helped make the Windows phone happen

Then, the device will be powered by an overclocked Snapdragon 845 chip, and Emperion says it worked closely with Microsoft to make sure everything’s running smoothly. How exactly Microsoft helped them is not clear, but further details will probably go live in the coming months.

The company says its Windows phone will launch SIM-free and carrier unlocked, but on the other hand, discussions with a carrier in the United Kingdom are already under way. However, Emperion also wants to launch its smartphone in the United States at some point in the future.

Little has been shared in terms of technical specifications, but what we do know is that traditional features like a headphone jack and microSD support will be offered, with the latter allowing for a storage boost of up to 2 TB.

What will certainly be the most interesting part about this Windows phone is how it will manage to deal with phone calls. Windows 10 on ARM doesn’t natively support phone calls, albeit third-party developers have previously managed to such capabilities on Lumia models.
