Windows 10 version 21H1 is approaching the EOL

Microsoft is getting ready for the end of another Windows 10 version, so the company plans to begin to automatically update the devices still running this operating system to the latest version available today.

Windows 10 version 21H1 will receive its last batch of updates next month, and Microsoft warns that users need to update to a newer release as soon as possible.

If this wouldn’t happen, the company says it’ll begin a new round of automatic updates on these devices. In other words, the computers still running Windows 10 version 21H1 will be automatically updated to version 22H2 just to make sure they remain protected.

It’s time to upgrade to a newer version of Windows 10

Worth knowing, however, is that the upgrade to Windows 11 wouldn’t take place unless users specifically request it. Obviously, this only applies to devices that are eligible for the switch to Windows 11, as otherwise, the rest of computers are stuck on Windows 10.

“To help keep devices protected and productive, Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update for devices running Home and Pro (non-domain joined) editions of Windows 10, version 21H1 that are reaching end of servicing. This keeps devices supported and receiving monthly updates that are critical to security and ecosystem health. Remember that you and your users can choose a convenient time for devices to restart and complete the update while remaining productive,” Microsoft explains in a new announcement.

“We will automatically update devices nearing end of servicing to the latest version of Windows 10, but you can opt to upgrade eligible devices to Windows 11.”

Windows 10 version 21H1 will reach the end of support on December 13. This means no further updates would be shipped to this version of the operating system, with the vulnerabilities discovered in the operating system to therefore remain unfixed.
