14 DAY TRIAL // Windows 11 is coming later this year, and Microsoft says that only some eligible Windows 10 devices would get the new operating system.
Needless to say, Windows 11 will be offered as a free upgrade to these computers, but on the other hand, Microsoft hasn’t provided any specifics as to what makes a device eligible or not.
But in a statement for PCWorld, Microsoft has confirmed that some Surface devices wouldn’t get the upgrade to Windows 11, as only the latest models would be allowed to install the new OS.
The oldest model getting the Windows 11 upgrade is the Surface Book 2 released in November 2017, though this is only the case if the device is powered by 8th Gen Intel Core processors. If your Surface Book 2 comes with an Intel Core i5-7300 chip, then you won’t get the Windows 11 upgrade.

“Windows 11 will be available through a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 PCs and on new PCs beginning this holiday. To check if your current Windows 10 PC is eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 11, visit Windows.com to download the PC Health Check app,” Microsoft explained.
“We’re also working with our retail partners to make sure Windows 10 PCs you buy today are ready for the upgrade to Windows 11. The free upgrade will begin to roll out to eligible Windows 10 PCs this holiday and continuing into 2022. And next week, we’ll begin to share an early build of Windows 11 to the Windows Insider Program – this is a passionate community of Windows fans whose feedback is important to us.”
Windows 11 will launch in the fall of this year.
