The company plays down hack rumors in recent tweet

Signal has long been considered one of the most secure messaging platforms, but a few days ago, rumors circulating online indicated the service got hacked and the data of users ended up exposed to malicious actors.

Clearly, this can’t be good news for a platform whose main objective is to provide users with state-of-the-art security, so Signal getting hacked was seen by many as reason enough to move to other platforms.

Well, this shouldn’t happen because Signal wasn’t hacked at all, the company announced today in a tweet. In fact, the platform hasn’t even been attacked, and the rumors of a potential hack are nothing more than a misinformation campaign supposed to convince people to make the switch to other services.

Signal wasn’t attacked

Signal says it noticed an increase in the number of users joining the platform from Eastern Europe, and the company believes this is one of the reasons it’s the target of this fake attack campaign.

“We've had an uptick in usage in Eastern Europe & rumors are circulating that Signal is hacked & compromised. This is false. Signal is not hacked. We believe these rumors are part of a coordinated misinformation campaign meant to encourage people to use less secure alternatives,” it said today.

“We’re seeing these rumors appear in messages forwarded on several different apps. These rumors are often attributed to official government sources and read “attacks on Signal platform.” This is false and Signal is not under attack.”

In other words, if you’re getting a message telling you that Signal got hacked, no matter where you receive it (on WhatsApp, Telegram, or other platforms), you can very well ignore them because they’re fake and you’re being targeted by bots whose job is to make you give up on Signal.

The platform is just as secure as ever and no attack happened whatsoever.
