Microsoft has decided to kill off another Office Mobile feature, and this time, it’s Share Nearby the one that is getting the axe.

The Redmond-based software giant explains in an announcement this week that Share Nearby is being retired because this feature is no longer meeting all needs of users.

As a result, it’s being discontinued, and Microsoft explains that it made it a priority to focus on this front and improve Microsoft 365 and Office Mobile in a way to make sharing much more convenient overall.

Worth knowing, however, is that the demise of Share Nearby will happen on December 31, but obviously, the files that have been sent and received with this feature wouldn’t be affected in any way.

“As we learn more about how users are sharing their documents, we strive to create functionality to meet user needs in the Office app and to work in tandem with iOS and Android to leverage simple sharing across a variety of apps. We have found that the Share Nearby feature to meet some but not all needs. We will be retiring the Share Nearby feature from the Office app as we evolve to offer the best of Microsoft 365 on mobile. This change will affect users of the Office app on Android and will be effective as of December 31, 2022,” Microsoft explains.

For the time being, if you want to send and receive files with Share Nearby, you can continue to do so until the end of the year.

“You will still be able to send and receive files using this feature until December 31, 2022. After this date, the feature will be removed from the Office app. Files that have been sent and received using this feature will continue to remain unaffected,” Microsoft says.
