Microsoft begins testing new OOBE experience

Microsoft has started testing a new OOBE experience for Windows 10, essentially making the whole process of setting up the operating system a more straightforward process.

How the company does this is with a new screen that allows users to choose how they want to use their devices. They can choose from a series of pre-defined profiles, like gaming, entertainment, and business, and based on their selection, Windows 10 will suggest different settings for a configuration that’s tailored for each option.

The new feature is part of Windows 10 build 20231, but right now, no matter what option you choose on the OOBE screen, the same options are offered. This is because the new approach is still a work in progress, but at some point in the future, Microsoft will add different profile settings for each entry.

“This is the initial wave of work for this feature, and Insiders may notice different options presented in OOBE depending on what they select, however at this time Insiders will not notice any other configuration differences after exiting OOBE. We look forward to sharing future improvements in this space,” Microsoft explains.

Only available for a limited set of testers

Given the feature is still in its early days, Microsoft wants to release it gradually to insiders too, so it’ll take a while until everybody can test it.

“This feature is rolling out to a subset of Insiders in the Dev Channel at first, to help us quickly identify issues that may impact performance and reliability. Rest assured they will be gradually rolled out to everyone in the Dev Channel. NOTE: You will see this feature if you choose to reset your PC and when you do a clean install of Windows,” the company says.

As for when the new OOBE is projected to go live for production devices, this is something that’s too early to discuss, especially because features in the Dev channel don’t have a specific ETA.
