New cumulative updates coming to PCs this week

Microsoft is getting ready for a new round of security updates for Windows devices as part of the company’s monthly Patch Tuesday cycle.

The rollout will begin tomorrow and will include, among others, new cumulative updates for Windows 10 PCs as well.

Cumulative updates are particularly important for Windows 10 users because they bring computers up-to-date when installing the latest release.

This means that you can stay protected and have all known issues fixed in Windows 10 as long as you install the latest cumulative updates. On the other hand, this approach has increased the size of cumulative updates, so if you haven’t updated your system in a long time, the package you’ll have to download will be quite large.

In other words, the updating process on such a system could take longer than expected, but it’s important to let it complete and not shut down the computer.

Patches for all Windows 10 versions

All versions of Windows 10 will get updates tomorrow, but it’s important to remember that at this point only the last three releases are supported for Home and Pro users. This means you must be running Windows 10 Creators Update, Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, or Windows 10 April 2018 Update to get new security patches.

However, next month Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) will also be retired, as Microsoft will ship another feature update called October 2018 Update.

Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803), which is currently the most recent feature update for the operating system, will continue to receive updates until November 12, 2019. Enterprise and Education editions will get updates for one extra year until November 10, 2020.

As it happens every month, it’ll be interesting to observe how the new patches will perform on Windows 10 devices, so we’ll keep an eye on possible reports of failed installs or other issues and let you know about them as soon as possible.
