Apple could launch the second-generation iPhone SE as soon as this year, according to a new report, and the name the company picked brings it in line with the other modern iPhones currently on sale.

iPhone XE is a completely overhauled version of the iPhone SE, and a report from PC-Tablet indicates that Apple could also increase the display size. As a result, iPhone XE would feature a 4.8-inch OLED display with a notch, just like the other modern-generation iPhones, with an edge-to-edge design and Face ID.

The fingerprint sensor would thus be ditched, so unlike the original iPhone SE, iPhone XE would go all-in on facial recognition.

The legacy design of the iPhone would be retained, the cited source says, so iPhone XE would come with an aluminum back, which means it won’t boast wireless charging.

Manufactured in India

When it comes to hardware, however, iPhone XE would match the performance of the latest models. The source claims Apple would equip the device with the A12 Bionic chip and offer a 12-megapixel camera with the same specs as the one of the iPhone XR.

iPhone XE would be manufactured in India by Foxconn and would cost around $600, the same source notes.

Apple is reportedly planning to expand the manufacturing operations in India with the addition of the latest-generation iPhones that would be produced by Foxconn. Currently, Apple only makes the original iPhone SE and the iPhone 6s in India at Wistron plants. This report thus aligns with Apple’s expansion plans, especially as the iPhone XE would be positioned as a more affordable model.

But as with everything in the rumor stage, a healthy dose of skepticism is definitely recommended, especially because no other reliable source indicated that a second-generation iPhone SE is coming.
