Microsoft is reporting that Sea of Thieves is a fantastic success for them, and it’s now considered to be the fastest-selling first-party new IP of this generation.

Sea of Thieves from Rare took a lot of people by surprise, and it managed to enthrall players with its pirate-themed open world adventure. But it seems that Microsoft might have been the most surprised, and they are now enjoying the fact that a lot of people seems to be wanting to play it.

Microsoft is always chasing after that one game that will turn more people towards Xbox One, and it’s a safe bet that Sea of Thieves wasn’t one of them. The fact that it had so much success is testament that a hit game can come from anywhere.

Windows Store is being used

The days of physical copies for games is slowly coming to an end, and Sea of Thieves is proof of that. Microsoft is also taking some cues from Steam, and it allows players to play the game on two different platforms with the same purchase. It might not seem like much, but it’s vital for the growth of the two platforms, PC, and Xbox One.

Microsoft thanked the community saying that “the worldwide excitement for Sea of Thieves has made it the fastest-selling first-party new IP of this generation. Having witnessed more than a million players on launch day, our community continues to grow and now has more than two million players. Alongside this, Sea of Thieves is already the best-selling Microsoft Studios first-party title on Windows 10.”

A lot of users have probably opened Windows Store for the first time, looking to buy and to play Sea of Thieves. We can only hope that Microsoft will learn something from this new experience.

Sea of Thieves launched on PC and Xbox One, and it’s available right now on both platforms.
