Serbian developer Mad Head Games revealed during yesterday’s Gamescom Opening Night Live their new game called Scars Above. Published by Prime Matter, Koch Media’s premium gaming label, the game has been in development for some time and is set to arrive in early 2023 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Described as a challenging sci-fi third-person action-adventure shooter, Scars Above combines the rewarding feeling of overcoming challenges with an appealing and intricate story. Set on a mysterious alien world, players must investigate a massive and enigmatic structure that appeared on Earth’s orbit.

The so-called “Metahedron” is being investigated by scientists and engineers, members of the Sentient Contact Assessment and Response team (SCAR). As anyone might have guessed, not everything goes according to plan, as the Metahedron sends the team across space on a mysterious extrasolar planet.

In Scars Above, players take the role of Dr. Kate Ward, a SCAR member, who wakes up dazed, alone in a strange, hostile environment. Although she’s not a soldier, Kate is resourceful and determined to do anything to survive.

The game lets players use a combination of ranged weapons, devices, consumables and melee attacks, mixed with a stamina management system as they have to run, dodge, exploit weak points and discover effective tactics to defeat alien enemies.

Scars Above’s combat system involves different elemental attacks that are necessary to break through otherwise impassable obstacles. Also, a crafting system will be available for players too, which will help them create different items and gadgets to aid them against the countless threats on the exoplanet.

Unfortunately, the reveal trailer that played at Gamescom is fully made of artwork, so no actual gameplay or screenshots of the game have been released yet. It’s a bit strange considering that the developer targets an early 2023 release, but here is hoping we’ll get a proper trailer sooner rather than later.
