The device could see daylight as soon as the next year

Despite the Galaxy Fold launch not going very smoothly, Samsung is still committed to expanding its foldable device lineup, and the next step appears to be the release of a completely different model in 2020.

A report from Korean media ETNews indicates that Samsung wants this new model to be a mix of old and new, so its form factor would technically pioneer a foldable smartphone with a clamshell design.

While the details on this project are still in their very early days, it looks like this Samsung smartphone is supposed to boast a 6.7-inch display that would fold inside along the center for the creation of two separate but equal parts.

More compact foldable smartphone

This approach would make the phone overall a lot easier to carry around, as the folded form factor would make it more compact. To overcome the setbacks of having both displays hidden, Samsung wants to use a third screen measuring just 1 inch specifically for stuff like notifications and calls.

By the looks of things, Samsung is so committed to launching this model that the company has already started the manufacturing of its parts, and this could be an indication that the device could go live in early 2020 rather than later the same year.

Samsung could unveil its second foldable phone alongside the Galaxy S11, which as per the company’s typical release schedule, is expected in the first months of the next year too.

Meanwhile, Samsung is working on giving the finishing touches to the Galaxy Fold for the second time, as its launch has been pushed back on several occasions due to various issues, most of them impacting the foldable screen. The Galaxy Fold will still come, however, albeit the date appears to be uncertain at this point.
