Combined with a total of five years of security updates

Samsung has once again refined its update policy, as the company has decided to offer a total of four Android generations to certain devices, all combined with five years of security updates.

The South Korean company previously offered only three major OS updates to its devices, and this has obviously caused a lot of criticism, especially when comparing Samsung with Apple.

The iPhone 6s, for example, which was released back in 2015, has even received iOS 15, while Samsung typically stopped releasing new Android versions to its devices after just three years.

Now the company is changing its mind with four Android releases and five years of security updates.

“In addition to offering extended One UI upgrades, Samsung will now provide up to five years of security updates to help protect select Galaxy devices. These updates — when paired with Samsung’s award-winning defense-grade security platform Samsung Knox — give Galaxy devices more secure end-to-end protection against potential security threats. On top of that, Samsung Galaxy Enterprise Edition customers will receive a one-year license for Samsung Knox Suite solutions to easily deploy and manage devices with access to a dashboard that tracks security updates and more,” the company said.

However, not all devices will get four versions of Android. The following models are eligible for the mix of four Android generations and five years of security updates:

  • Galaxy S Series: Galaxy S22, S22+, S22 Ultra as well as Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra, S21 FE and upcoming S series devices
  • Galaxy Z Series: Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip3 and upcoming Z series devices
  • Galaxy A Series: upcoming select A series devices
  • Galaxy Tablets: Galaxy Tab S8, S8+, S8 Ultra and upcoming Tab S series devices

This means Samsung Galaxy S22, which was announced with Android 12, will also get Android 16, the operating system that’s supposed to launch in four years.
