14 DAY TRIAL // Rumor has it that Samsung is hard at work to get the in-display fingerprint sensor ready for its Android smartphones, but as it turns out, the Galaxy S10 coming next year may not be the first model to get this tech.
Instead, Samsung is believed to be working on a new line of phones called Galaxy P30 and P30+. The two devices may be unveiled at the company’s event next month, and according to recent speculation, could use an LCD screen.
This is surprising, to say the least, as Samsung builds its very own OLED panels that are used not only on its models, but also on rival devices like Apple’s iPhone.
However, with the target markets being China and India, both the P30 and the P30+ are supposed to be more affordable, so sticking with LCD is a way to keep the price as low as possible.
The fingerprint sensor
It’s also believed that the two devices may come with a fingerprint sensor embedded into the glass, which means that Samsung could use them to try out this new technology before making it available on other devices as well, including the flagship S10.
It’s worth noting, however, that there are contradictory reports in this regard, and it’s not yet clear if P30 could indeed come with such a fingerprint sensor. But if it does, there’s a good chance that Samsung uses an optical reader, which once again is seen as a cost-saving measure.
On the other hand, the Galaxy S10 lineup launching next year may see daylight with an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor embedded into the glass, which is faster and offers more accuracy. Obviously, this is a more expensive choice, but it makes more sense on a device that will cost more anyway.
While the P30 is expected to launch next month, the Galaxy S10 may only see daylight in early 2019, possibly in late January or in the first weeks of February.
