The release of Apple Silicon has convinced many large tech companies that it’s time to invest in custom chips, and Samsung is one of the giants that are in a position allowing it to follow in the footsteps of its rival quite easily.

Samsung’s Exynos chip, which is already used on smartphones, will make the switch to the PC world as soon as this year, according to a recent report, as the South Koreans are looking to offer a rapid response to Apple’s M1 processor.

Built on a 5-nanometer platform, the new Exynos chip for laptops will be developed together with AMD for improved graphical performance, with one source telling The Korea Economic Daily that the company is expecting “extraordinary computer power and battery efficiency.”

Following in on Apple’s footsteps

In other words, it’s the same recipe that Apple has used for the M1 chip that already powers its devices.

“M1 delivers up to 3.5x faster CPU performance, up to 6x faster GPU performance, and up to 15x faster machine learning, all while enabling battery life up to 2x longer than previous-generation Macs. With its profound increase in performance and efficiency, M1 delivers the biggest leap ever for the Mac,” Apple says about its chip.

As far as Samsung’s new-generation Exynos is concerned, it should see the daylight in the second half of the year, thus making the South Korean company the first big Windows device manufacturer to come up with its very own custom chip.

For the time being, Samsung has remained completely tight-lipped on such plans, but everything makes perfect sense, especially as the company could also use the Exynos chip to boost Microsoft’s Windows on ARM plans.

So given no confirmation exists, a healthy dose of skepticism is still required, at least until more sources unveil Samsung’s custom chip plans.
