Samsung took the wraps off its new foldables earlier this month, and both the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 are currently available for pre-order, with the first units already in the hands of the luckiest customers who got them early.

But on the other hand, no figures are available to let us figure out just how successful the new foldables really are, even if at the first glance, the demand and the online buzz regarding both devices are impressive, to say the least.

And according to Yonhap News, both foldables are already selling like hotcakes, and the early figures regarding the South Korean market indicate the new models are way more successful than their predecessors.

The two 2021 models recorded combined preorders of 800,000 units, with the Galaxy Z Flip 3 alone accounting for 60 percent. In other words, approximately 480,000 customers ordered the Flip, whereas some 320,000 of them went for the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Samsung’s foldable strategy

To better understand just how successful the new models actually are, we should just compare the new figures to the ones recorded for the previous generation. Samsung’s pre-order program totaled 80,000 units of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in South Korea, so the new model is more than 3 times more successful than the model it replaces.

So at the first glance, Samsung’s aggressive push for foldables is paying off, at least in its home market. There are no figures for international markets, but more numbers would definitely be interesting, especially as other companies, Apple included, don’t seem to be in a rush to invest in foldables.

Apple is projected to launch the new iPhone 13 generation next month, and once again, the new models would stick with the current form factor, while a foldable model is expected in the next two or three years.
