14 DAY TRIAL // Samsung is said to be working on a new Galaxy model that could launch in the coming months and tackle the lower-end phone market.
Called Galaxy R, the device wouldn’t be a rival to Apple’s iPhone XR, despite the name resemblance, but actually hit the shelves as a potential successor to the Galaxy J.
Details at this point are rather scarce, as Samsung hasn’t yet confirmed the speculation. However, rumors of a potential Galaxy R model first reached the web earlier this year when it was believed that the South Korean firm planned this approach for a slightly more affordable device based on the Galaxy S lineup, but featuring several cost-saving measures.
While this would have brought us a direct rival to the iPhone XR, a recent rumor indicates the device may be powered by a Snapdragon 450 chips, which is a clear suggestion the mid-range to low-end market is what the smartphone could be aimed at.
Low-cost alternative to Galaxy S?
However, despite this processor choice, the Galaxy R could still come with features that are more often found on more expensive Samsung smartphones, including the Infinity display. If this is indeed happening, Samsung probably plans to use its signature display technology to boost sales of other phone series too, not only the flagship Galaxy S.
And as a leader of the display market, Samsung has what it takes to expand this approach to a wider array of devices, so it makes sense for the Infinity display to make it to more affordable models too.
As for the launch of the Galaxy R, nothing is known at this point, but the public debut may not be as far as anticipated. The latest R-branded model made the rounds back in 2011 as a more affordable version of the Galaxy S, and if the same approach is used, expect this device to see daylight in early 2019, just after the January/February unveiling of the Galaxy S10.
