14 DAY TRIAL // Samsung has just taken the wraps off the so-called Galaxy S Light, a new model particularly aimed at the Chinese market that’s mostly referred to as the Galaxy S8 Lite.
Primarily a stripped-down version of the Galaxy S8, the new device looks like the original flagship launched last year, but instead comes with more modest hardware, obviously in an attempt to keep the price down.
This means that the Luxury tag in the naming, the device isn’t exactly a luxurious or premium model, instead focusing on delivering good value for the money.
Mid-range specs
When it comes to specifications, the device features a 5.8-inch Infinity Display like the original Galaxy S8, also with a 18.5:9 aspect ratio, but instead comes with an FHD+ resolution. This shouldn’t be a problem given the high quality of the Samsung displays, but it’s still a downgrade from the S8.
Additionally, power comes from a Snapdragon 660 processor, way slower than the 835 model that was installed on the 2017 flagship. You also get 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, as well as a 3,000 mAh battery.
The camera arsenal comes in the form of a 16-megapixel unit on the back and an 8-megapixel unit on the front, and you also get a fingerprint sensor placed on the rear side. A Bixby button continues to be offered, and so is iris scanning and facial recognition, as well as 4G, Samsung Pay, and wireless charging.
The device is available in two different colors, namely Burgundy Red and Midnight Black, and comes with AKG earphones in the box.
The new Samsung Galaxy S Light Luxury is currently available in China for ¥3999 (approximately $625), and there’s no word just yet on whether the South Korean manufacturer wants to bring it to other countries as well. There’s a good chance it won’t, however, despite it making sense for other developing markets where the more expensive Galaxy S flagships aren’t selling well due to the price.
