Nigerian man says his phone exploded all of a sudden

While it appears that Samsung has more or less addressed the issue of exploding phones on the latest-generation models, reports pointing to such incidents make the headlines every once in a while.

This weekend, a Nigerian Samsung customer revealed on Twitter that his phone caught fire all of a sudden, even without being connected to a charger.

Photos that he published on the social network show the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge with damages to both the front and the back glass, and there are signs that the explosion occurred from the place where the battery would normally be.

Obviously, it’s hard to determine the cause of the incident by simply looking at some photos, but given the screen burn, it all seems to point to an issue with the battery.

Samsung already looking into it

The owner says he had to throw the phone into a bucket of water to make sure no other damages are produced.

“I had to deep this phone inside a bucket of water to stop the explosion. We have to be very careful with this gadget especially when we have kids around,” the original tweet reads. “Luckily for me I left the phone on the table. It wasn’t even plugged to electricity,” the owner added in a follow-up tweet.

The official Samsung South Africa Twitter account has already joined the conversation and requested the owner to provide more information and get in touch with the company, most likely for a closer inspection of the device.

At this point, key information about this incident is still missing, such as any hardware repairs that the device might have received. Given that Samsung is already looking into the case, there’s a chance an investigation has already started, so it remains to be seen if we’ll find out more details about this or not.
