Software trick available on the new Galaxy S10

One of the most notable changes on the Samsung Galaxy S10 lineup is the front-facing camera embedded into the glass, which thus makes it possible to avoid using the controversial notch.

While many believe the camera cutout itself is a different type of notch, Samsung wanted the Galaxy S10 to meet the expectations of all its customers, so the device comes with software tweaks to allow it to do that.

So while the camera cutout might be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of feature, Samsung allows users to hide it using a trick that we’ve seen being used on the iPhone X and other phones coming with a notch.

The Galaxy S10 thus comes with a dedicated option in the settings screen called “Hide front camera,” which “adds a black bar to the top of the screen so the front camera won’t be visible.”

In other words, the Galaxy S10 will get a black bar at the top that will simulate a larger black bezel, with the camera cutout being part of it.

This means the cutout wouldn’t be so noticeable anymore, though the major drawback is obvious: you end up with a phone with huge top bezels, which I’m pretty sure isn’t the kind of compromise that many people are willing to do.

The same software trick has been used on phones with notches too, so once you enable the black bar on the Galaxy 10, similar visual modifications are applied too. While the clock stays on the left, the signal bars and battery indicator are realigned to the right part of the screen.

In the meantime, if you’re not a big fan of the camera cutout, you can use the trick that Samsung turned to as well: stick with a black background that makes the front-facing camera less noticeable. Lots of such wallpapers are being offered with the Galaxy S10, so check out the default background collection offered by Samsung.
