Samsung is getting ready to launch the new Galaxy Note20, and the closer we get to this moment, the more information on the device makes the rounds.

The most recent report suggests that the Galaxy Note20 could actually be cheaper than its predecessor, despite the addition of new features and latest-generation hardware.

Naver reports via industry sources that the Galaxy Note20 could start at $999 in South Korea – this, however, is likely to be the standard version of the device, with the Galaxy Note20 Ultra to be available from $1,040.

In other words, this means that the new-generation model could be some $50 cheaper than its predecessor, which is without a doubt good news for everybody planning to purchase the phone.

But on the other hand, what nobody knows is whether Samsung wants this price cut to happen in all markets, not just in South Korea. In the United States, the Galaxy Note10 was available from $949, so if this approach is used elsewhere too, then the new phone could hit the shelves starting at $900.

A price drop that just makes sense

This is certainly a surprising price for Samsung’s latest and greatest mobile device, but on the other hand, it’s a strategy that pretty much makes sense given the market performance of the Galaxy S20.

Launched in February and available from March, the Galaxy S20 has been a victim of the global health crisis, as its sales were mostly based on online retailers. Needless to say, the Galaxy S20 performed well below expectations, and now Samsung is believed to be concerned about a similar impact on the Note20 as well.

A price cut could help make the Note20 a more compelling purchase, albeit it remains to be seen if this is enough for the company to deal with the impact of the health crisis. We’ll find out more shortly after the August 5 unveiling.
