First devices getting the update as we speak

Samsung has officially started the rollout of the Android Pie update for the Galaxy Note 9, with the first devices getting it as we speak in Germany.

The South Korean company hasn’t publicly announced the release of the Android Pie update for the Note 9, but information that was posted in the last few weeks indicated that the rollout was projected to kick off in January.

By the looks of things, the rollout has started in Germany, and there is a good chance that more countries would follow soon. However, it’s very important to know that Samsung expanding the availability of the Android Pie update for the Note 9 could take longer than expected, as the company gradually makes it available across the world.

A similar approach has been used for the Galaxy S9 update to Android Pie as well, whose rollout was started in late 2018. However, only a very limited number of countries received the update to Android Pie on the Galaxy S9, and the rollout is set to continue throughout 2019.

Rolling out to the first devices now

The Android Pie update for the Note 9 lands on devices as N960FXXU2CRLT and installing it also brings the smartphones to the January 2019 security patch level.

For the time being, the update to Android Pie doesn’t seem to be available elsewhere. I checked for updates on my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 here in Romania and the update isn’t yet up for grabs. The device is still running the December 2018 security patch level.

In the meantime, Samsung is also giving the finishing touches to the Galaxy S10, which is projected to be unveiled next month with Android Pie out of the box. Also, Samsung is believed to be preparing an Android Pie beta program for the Samsung Galaxy S8 too, but details in this regard aren’t yet available.
