Samsung has finally confirmed a major product unveiling scheduled to happen in January, though before you ask, no, this isn’t the highly anticipated Galaxy S21 also due next month.

The South Korean company has confirmed its new flagship Exynos chip would be announced on January 12, and by the looks of things, this happens only two days before the S21 officially sees the daylight.

“A whole new Exynos is coming. January 12, 2021,” Samsung tweeted.

Of course, this is the new Exynos chip that will also power the Galaxy S21, and there’s a good chance it’ll land as Exynos 2100. The new chip will be built on a 5nm process, and the target is quite obvious: the company wants to make it a worthy alternative to the Snapdragon 888 built by Qualcomm.

Exynos versus Snapdragon

And speaking of Qualcomm’s chips, it’s worth knowing the upcoming Galaxy S21 will use the same approach as its predecessors and come with a choice of two processors, depending on market.

While in South Korea and the United States the Galaxy S21 will be powered by Qualcomm’s chip, in international markets the device will use the upcoming Exynos 2100.

And the big question is how the new Exynos chip will compare to the Snapdragon 888. In the past, the performance gap between the two has caused quite a lot of criticism against Samsung, as many wanted the Snapdragon variant in all markets where the Galaxy S was sold.

This time, however, it’s believed Samsung is putting more effort into getting the Exynos chip right, though it goes without saying it remains to be seen how the new processor actually performs side by side with its Snapdragon alternative.

The Galaxy S will be launched on January 14 and then go on sale later the same month.
