Patent reveals possible Samsung design approach

Just like all the other phone makers worldwide, Samsung is trying to make bezels as less noticeable as possible, and while some go for notches, the South Korean firm is exploring other ideas.

One of them is reducing the size of bezels as much as possible and then display critical information on the back of the phone as well.

As odd as this approach might sound, it is detailed in a patent discovered recently and which shows that Samsung isn’t going for notches, but instead it’s more interested in some very innovative methods.

As you can see in the photos included in this article, Samsung would nearly eliminate the bottom chin, keeping a small bezel at the top of the display for all the front-facing parts like the camera and the earpiece.

But on the other hand, the back of the phone would be completely reconfigured to make room for a secondary display whose role is still unclear at this point.

The camera, however, would be moved to the upper left corner together with the flash. There’s no fingerprint sensor, but this is most likely embedded into the screen in this design concept, though there’s a chance that Samsung could also make the move to facial recognition with a more advanced implementation like on the iPhone X.

As with everything still in patent stage, it’s hard to say whether the company wants to bring this design into production or it’s just exploring new ideas to evolve the design of its smartphones.

But judging from the existing images, this does seem to be a very innovative way to increase the available screen estate without turning to notches or dual-screen form factors. In the meantime, however, Samsung is also believed to be giving the final touches to a foldable phone whose debut should happen sometime in the first months of 2019.
