The competition in the mobile device space is as fierce as ever, and despite Apple managing to secure the lion’s share in. the fourth quarter of 2022, Samsung still ended the year on the leading spot.

New data from Canalys reveals that last year Samsung managed to increase its market share to 22 percent, with a similar trend also observed in the case of Apple (up 2 percent to 19 percent).

The growth recorded by Samsung and Apple is mostly the result of the decline recorded by Chinese companies, including not only Huawei but also Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo.

Xiaomi, however, remained the third name in the charts with a market share of 13 percent.

“Worldwide smartphone shipments fell 17% year on year in Q4 2022. Full-year 2022 shipments declined by 11% to fewer than 1.2 billion, reflecting an extremely challenging year for all vendors. Apple reclaimed the top spot in Q4 and achieved its highest quarterly market share ever at 25%, despite facing shrinking demand and manufacturing issues in Zhengzhou. Samsung finished the quarter second with a 20% market share but was the largest vendor for the full year. Xiaomi retained third place despite its share falling to 11% in Q4, largely due to challenges in India. OPPO and vivo rounded out the top five, taking 10% and 8% market shares respectively,” Canalys says.

2023 is going to be a difficult year for phone makers, and the market intelligence firm says most companies will be focused on retaining their market shares.

Big launches are expected in 2023 as well, and the first notable release is the Samsung Galaxy S23 projected to see daylight on February 1.

Apple will unveil its new-generation iPhone lineup in September, but this year, it looks like no new iPhone SE would see daylight, as the company plans to go all-in on premium devices.
