Foldable phone landing earlier than initially planned

The battle between Samsung and Apple is getting a lot more exciting, especially as the South Korean firm is working around the clock to bring to the market some of its latest products.

Among them, there’s the highly-anticipated foldable smartphone, originally expected in the spring of 2019.

But according to DJ Koh, CEO of Samsung Mobile, the foldable phone could see daylight a lot sooner, with the current target now being November.

This means the Samsung Galaxy X, if this is indeed the name that Samsung wants to use for this device, could hit the market approximately one month and a half after the iPhone XS.

A “complicated” product

Koh, however, explains that the foldable smartphone hasn’t yet been finalized, but says that a possible launch in November at the Samsung Developer Conference is on the table.

“You can use most of the uses ... on foldable status. But when you need to browse or see something, then you may need to unfold it. But even unfolded, what kind of benefit does that give compared to the tablet? If the unfolded experience is the same as the tablet, why would they (consumers) buy it? So every device, every feature, every innovation should have a meaningful message to our end customer. So when the end customer uses it, (they think) 'wow, this is the reason Samsung made it,’” he was quoted as saying to CNBC.

While bringing the foldable phone to the market in November would certainly create a fierce battle for customers between Apple and Samsung, the South Korean firm may use a different approach and only showcase the device this fall.

This means the launch could still take place in early 2019, and Samsung might only be trying to fuel the excitement around the project. If this is the strategy that the company wants to use remains to be seen, but in the meantime, it appears that this fall isn’t just all about iPhones.
