New iPad to get significant overhaul for next generation

In addition to a completely new lineup of iPhones projected to be unveiled next week, Apple is also working on a major visual overhaul of the iPad.

And new renders published today by @OnLeaks and MySmartPrice envision what the device may look like, all based on information from leaks and schematics.

There are several significant changes, some of them quite unexpected, but also design cues that are borrowed from the iPhone.

It all starts with the new antenna lines that are obviously similar to the ones available on the latest iPhone models – this antenna design approach was introduced on the iPhone 7 and used ever since on every generation.

Furthermore, the SIM tray appears to be placed on the side of the tablet now, and the Smart Connector, which allows the connection of keyboards, is now on the back.

A larger iPhone 4

The design of the iPad overall hasn’t changed much, though one of the most striking modifications is the removal of the curved edges of the tablet and replaced with flat sides. This makes the iPad look more like an oversized iPhone 4, though it goes without saying that this design could offer increased grip when the device is held in hands.

Given the bezels at the top of the screen, there is no need to bring a notch to the iPad, so this design idea won’t make it to the tablet, or at least not yet. Earlier this year, it was rumored that the iPad could also feature a notch, but as it turns out, Face ID and the front-facing camera would be integrated into the upper bezels without the need for any other notable design changes.

As for the release date, it’s not yet known when the iPad Pro could see daylight, but it shouldn’t take too long before this happens. While the September 12 is unlikely to bring us the new iPad, a fall launch is still possible.
