14 DAY TRIAL // With the Windows 7 end of support set for today, there’s basically no better time to upgrade to Windows 10 other than right now.
And in addition to the obvious security risks caused by the lack of security updates, there’s another reason why you should at least consider the migration to Windows 10: the upgrade continues to be free for all consumers.
Windows 10 was originally offered as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.1 users, as long as the upgrade was performed in the first 12 months after launch. In other words, users had until July 2016 to upgrade to Windows 10 at no cost, after which everyone running Windows 7 or 8.1 was supposed to pay for a license.
You get a free upgrade, and you get a free upgrade
However, Microsoft never blocked the free upgrades to Windows 10, and in fact, they are possible today because of a simple reason, at least according to an alleged company employee: it’s all about the numbers.
Microsoft wants everyone to be running Windows 10, so it silently extended the free upgrade promo indefinitely, technically allowing any Windows 7 or 8.1 user to install Windows 10 at no extra cost.
“That whole "free" upgrade for a year was fully marketing fluff,” the employee said.
So right now, if you’re on Windows 7 and want to upgrade to Windows 10, you can still do it at no additional cost and without purchasing a license. An in-place upgrade is everything you need, and you can learn here how to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free.
At this point, it’s not known if Microsoft plans to end this offer anytime soon, but given that it needs as many people as possible on Windows 10, I seriously doubt the company wants to do this. Nevertheless, it’s better to do it while you still can.
