The Raspberry Pi Foundation unveiled today the next-generation of their Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3 (CM3) device, which comes with faster performance and more storage than the previous series.

Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ follows on the footsteps of the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3 (CM3) series announced in January 2017, offering owners of the tiny Linux computers a general-purpose, cost-efficient, and much simpler SBC (Single-board Computer), allowing them to slot it in and out of any device. It comes with 10x the ARM performance, 8x the Flash capacity, and 2x the RAM capacity of CM3.

"CM3+ is an evolution of CM3 and CM1, bringing new features while keeping the form factor, electrical compatibility, price point, and ease of use of the earlier products," says James Adams, COO Raspberry Pi Trading. "Our aim for the Compute Module was to deliver the core Raspberry Pi technology in a form factor that allowed others to incorporate it into their own products cheaply and easily."

Technical specs of Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+

While Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ uses the same board as CM3, it brings improved thermal design, the Broadcom BCM2837B0 application processor from the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ single-board computer, but running at 1.2GHz instead of 1.4GHz, up to 32GB eMMC Flash memory, improved PCB thermal design to better support high loads without getting hot, and 1GB LPDDR2 SDRAM.

Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ is available for purchase starting today in four variants, Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ Lite for $25 USD, Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ 8GB for $30 USD, Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ 16GB for $35, and Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ 32GB for $40 USD. To work correctly, Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ needs the latest Raspberry Pi firmware and Raspbian Linux OS or Ubuntu.

Also today, the Raspberry Pi Foundation announced the general availability of the 2nd generation Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ Development Kit, containing a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ Lite, a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ 32GB, a Raspberry Pi Compute Module IO board, a programming cable, jumper wires, as well as camera and display adapters. Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ will be supported until January 2026.
