For Purism, the company that sells quality computers using a Linux-based operating system and are intended to protect user's privacy and freedom, designing a convergent Linux phone is a long-term goal to unify the mobile experience across various devices.

Purism's François Téchené shares some initial details on how the company plans to use convergence for their short and long-term design goals of Librem 5, the Linux smartphone that raised more than $2 million on Kickstarter last year, saying they're looking to unify the human experience across different device you might own.

For the Librem 5 Linux phone, Purism plans to design responsive and adaptative layouts, as well as interaction patterns that will allow modern mobile apps to adapt to the device's screen. Convergence will be used for making accessing of services and data between different devices as transparent and simple as possible.

"Convergence, for Purism, is a long-term goal to unify the human experience across different devices," says François Téchené in a report. "Our approach will consist in designing “responsive” (adaptative) layouts and interaction patterns that will allow modern apps to adapt themselves to the device that it is running on."

Defining consistent Human Interface Guidelines for Librem 5

Purism's convergence plans for the Librem 5 smartphone include the optimization of the development tools and documentation that'll help developers create a powerful mobile experience across different devices users might own, thus making it easier to connect and interact with their Linux phone.

François Téchené also said that no specific technologies would be used for the UI and UX design of the upcoming Linux phone, which will rely on existing technologies, the Ethical Design manifesto, as well as Purism's requirements for privacy and security. The company also wants to define consistent Human Interface Guidelines for Librem 5.

With that in mind, Purism will aim to offer a smartphone with the best possible mobile design principles and an optimized mobile shell experience, which will allow users to choose between different interfaces like KDE Plasma Mobile or GNOME Shell, as well as to access the device's most important features with ease.
