Canonical, the company behind the world's most popular Linux-based operating system, Ubuntu, announced today the availability of the Plex Media Server as a Snap app in the Snap Store.

Already available as binary packages for Debian- and Red Hat-based operating systems using the DEB and RPM package format, the Plex Media Server over-the-top (OTT) media service used by millions worldwide is now easier to install across a multitude of GNU/Linux distributions as a Snap app from Canonical's Snap Store.

"The biggest appeal of Snaps is the simple installation mechanism," said Tamas Szelei, Software Engineer at Plex. "Canonical's Snap Store provides an easy and secure way to distribute our software to an increasing number of consumers. What's more, Snaps help cater to the more technical Plex user, who benefits from confined applications and the added sense of software security."

For those unfamiliar with the Plex Media Server, it's a free media streaming application that combines online and local video, image, and other multimedia content into a single, convenient place. It lets you stream videos, watch and record live TV, as well as to listen to music and podcasts across all of your devices.

Here's how to install Plex as a Snap app on Ubuntu, other Linux distros

Canonical's Snappy technologies are currently available for Ubuntu, as well as a wide range of GNU/Linux distributions, including Arch Linux, Fedora, Debian GNU/Linux, OpenSuSE, Gentoo Linux, Linux Mint, System76's Pop!_OS, elementary OS, OpenEmbedded/Yocto, OpenWrt, Raspbian, KDE neon, Zorin OS, and Solus.

Installing the Plex Media Server using the Snap universal Linux app packaging format on any of these supported distributions is as easy as verifying if your operating system of choice has the Snappy (Snapd) technologies installed and running, then executing one of the commands listed below in a terminal emulator.

sudo snap install plexmediaserver --beta sudo snap install plexmediaserver --edge The advantage of Snaps is that they provide Linux users with automatic updates and rollback capabilities, better security, and access to the latest versions of apps as soon as they're released upstream. Plex offers those who choose to install Plex Media Server as a Snap app a free 30-day trial of its Plex Pass premium service.

Plex Pass comes with lots of benefits, including time-shifting control over live TV so you can pause, rewind, and fast-forward your favorite shows.
