New option to store games on external storage, more features

Sony has been quite slow in making PlayStation 5 the perfect console. Besides a few updates that fixed a bunch of issues with the initial software, there haven't been any improvements added since PlayStation 5 was introduced on the market.

Fast forward several months and the PlayStation 5 is finally getting an update worth reporting about. Before we go deeper into what you should expect from this update, let's mention that this won't be available until tomorrow, April 14.

The first important new feature included in the update is the option to store your PlayStation 5 games on an external storage drive. The bad news is you will only be able to store them, no play them from an external drive. Its usefulness is limited to the fact that you will be able to install the games from your external storage drive rather than download them again or copy them from a disc, which should be faster according to Sony.

Keep in mind that you will not be able to download games directly on your USB extended storage, so you'll have to first install them on the PlayStation 5 and then transfer them. In addition, you will be able to select which game modes you want to install (i.e. campaign or multiplayer) for select titles that support the option.

Furthermore, Sony revealed that the upcoming update will introduce new social features for both PS4 and PS5 players. First off, we have cross-generation Share Play, which means that PS4 and PS5 players will be able to Share Play together while chatting in parties. PS5 players can let friends on PS4 consoles view their game screen, or even try out the PS5 games through Share Play, and vice versa.

PlayStation 5 users will also get an improved Game Base menu, which should allow them to access important content and features faster than before. For example, players will be able to switch between Parties and Friends, as well as turn notifications on or off for each of the parties they're in.

There will be a new trophy setting and stats screen too, as players will be able to choose to only capture and save images/videos of moments when they earn higher-grade trophies, like Gold or Platinum. Also, a new player Trophy Stats screen where players can check out the summary of their trophy level and status at a glance is included in the update.
