It might look nothing like the final product

We're still one year away from the PlayStation 5 launch, but we'll probably get a glimpse of Sony's next-generation console much earlier. It's hard to believe the Japanese company will introduce the PlayStation 5 at E3 2020, so we're betting on a dedicated event that will be announced at some point next year.

But we're not totally in the dark when it comes to Sony's next gaming console. The Japanese giant confirmed a report about the so-called DualShock 5 and even explained the technology behind the controller in a long post a few months ago.

The most guarded secret though is the design of the PlayStation 5, which is likely to go on sale during the holiday season in 2020. A picture showing two PS5 dev kits has just popped up online courtesy to a developer (via @Alcoholikaust) who “just didn't give a fuck” and allowed someone to take a picture of the consoles and publicize it.

One might think that Sony's heavily guarded secret is out in the open, but that's far from the truth. Typically, dev kits look nothing like the final product, and the PlayStation 5 might be no exception to this unspoken rule.

Even though The Verge's Tom Warren chimed in on Twitter to confirm that this is indeed the PS5 dev kit, that's still no evidence that the console we'll be able to buy next year will look the same. Warren explained that the reason the PS5 dev kit is so large and V-shaped is to “make them more easily stackable for devs who are running multiple stress tests. The cooling is optimized to push air out of the sides and center.”

The photo leaked today tallies with images from a Sony patent that made headlines several weeks ago, so there's no doubt that what we're seeing in the picture is the PS5 dev kit. The next thing to determine now is what the launch product will look like.
