The smartphone promises a new feature that Apple won't offer

Now that OnePlus has confirmed the technical specifications of its upcoming flagship device, the OnePlus 6, as well as the fact that it will have a new design with a display notch, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer assured users they'll be able to disable the "notch."

We already knew the OnePlus 6 smartphone would join the crowd and adopt a display notch design, but we did not knew we'd be able to disable it, a functionality that Google recently implemented in its Android P mobile operating system, and that other mobile phone manufacturers don't offer, at least not now.

According to OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, the new feature of the OnePlus 6 smartphone is called "black-out" and promises to let users black out the background of both the notifications and the status bar so that you won't see the notch anymore if you're not a fan and you want your OnePlus phone to look like all the current models.

"A black-out feature was seriously considered in the early stages of the development of the OnePlus 6. At the time we decided against adding this feature," said Pete Lau, OnePlus CEO. "This function will enable you to black out the background of the notifications and status bar."

"We wanted to focus all of our time and resources on delivering an exceptional full-screen experience. I still believe the best way to experience the OnePlus 6 is using the full potential of the display. Recently many users have raised interest in having a black-out function. We respect your feedback, and would like to give everyone the ability to choose," he wrote.

The feature will be added after the launch of the OnePlus 6

Unfortunately, the black-out feature won't be available at launch, which isn't far away, as OnePlus said it would implement it in a future software update. Nonetheless, it's a great feature that should be present on all Android phones that have adopted the notch, so be prepared to hear more about it now that OnePlus will be using it.

As far as the specifications go, the OnePlus 6 will be powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 845 chip, up to 8GB RAM, and up to  256GB storage. Upgraded camera and connectivity components are expected as well, but we will have more details when the device is officially unveiled by OnePlus.
