Opera 54 has been promoted to the stable channel for all supported platforms, including Linux, Windows, and macOS, bringing extra functionality and more improvements to the Chromium-based web browser.

Based on Chromium 67.0.3396.87, the Opera 54 web browser introduces the ability to view local and global news directly on the Speed Dial. Users will be able to configure the new feature to display news in their language or country for a more varied content, filter the content shown by selecting multiple categories, as well as to personalize the news feed from the Personal News page.

“Multiple categories can be selected to filter the content you wish to see on your Speed Dial. Categories include arts, business, entertainment, food, health, lifestyle, living, motoring, news, science, sports, technology and travel. More than 40 country and language sources are available, and you can also select more than one to receive a variety of news content,” reads the announcement.

New “Update & Recovery” section in the menu

The second biggest feature of the Opera 54 web browser is a new Update & Recovery section in the menu designed to make updating and recovering Opera a breeze and more efficient. To access the new Update & Recovery menu page, users would have to click on the O Menu button if they use Linux or Windows, as well as to click Opera in the menu bar if they’re on macOS.

As revealed during the beta stages of development, the new Update & Recovery menu page promises to let users reset their web browser to default settings in case it slows down in time. Two options are available when recovering Opera, to reset the settings while keeping your browsing data and to do a full reset that would also erase your browsing data so you can start fresh.

Existing Opera users should update their installations using the built-in OTA (Over-the-Air) update system.
