Michel Dänzer released new major versions of the xf86-video-amdgpu and xf86-video-ati open-source graphics drivers for Linux-based operating systems with support for the latest GNU/Linux technologies.

The xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0 and xf86-video-ati 19.0 series are now available for Linux users utilizing AMD Radeon GPUs, adding support for up to 6 independent instances per graphics card in "Zaphod" style multi-head configurations, as well as a more robust TearFree feature, which received several enhancements.

xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0, the X.Org display driver for AMD Radeon GPUs, also adds support for FreeSync variable refresh rates, which requires the AMDGPU driver from the latest Linux 5.0 kernel series and the RadeonSI driver from the new Mesa 19.0 graphics stack, as well as support for scanout buffers through DCC color compression.

Coming soon to a GNU/Linux distro near you

A few days after the release of the xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0 and xf86-video-ati 19.0 series, the first point releases, version 19.0.1, were published with support for RandR output tile properties, a feature that promises to allow display that use DisplayPort's Multi-Stream Transport (MST) tiling to perform better without additional tweaks.

However, the developers noted the fact that the DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST) support in the radeon kernel driver is still experimental, thus disabled by default. On top of that, the xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0.1 also addresses two regressions discovered in the xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0.0 release.

The xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0.1 and xf86-video-ati 19.0.1 open-source graphics drivers are available for download right now through our free software portal for any GNU/Linux distribution and support X.Org Servers from versions 1.13 to 1.20. They're also coming soon to a Linux distro near you in the next few weeks.
