Microsoft is now working to add browser extensions to Edge browser, and there’s word that preview builds of Windows 10 that include such a feature could start rolling out by the end of the year.

In the meantime, Microsoft has “accidentally” published online a page showing two Edge extensions already being developed, namely Pinterest and Reddit, but it turns out that more are to come in the near future.

After AdBlock, which confirmed that its own Edge browser extension would launch “very soon,” now LastPass, a very popular password manager, has also announced that it’s working on support for Microsoft’s new browser integrated into Windows 10.

There is no release date available at this point, but LastPass creators have noted that, once Microsoft rolls out extension support for its browser, they can offer their extension too.

“Microsoft Edge is the new, default browser available with Windows 10. Microsoft has not yet announced extension support for Edge browser. As soon as we can, we will offer a LastPass extension for Windows 10 Edge,” LastPass said. “The LastPass extension can be downloaded to any other browser on Windows 10. Simply visit our download page: https://lastpass.com/download to install the extension in the browser toolbar in Internet Explorer 11, Firefox, Chrome, or Opera.”

Extension support coming in 2016

While preview builds of Windows 10 with support for Edge extensions could arrive by the end of this month or possibly in early 2016, the stable version will not be here by the summer of 2016, when Microsoft is expected to ship Redstone, a major update for the OS.

Redstone will include a wide array of changes, but browser extensions will be among the most important, as Microsoft plans to offer further functionality for the browser and thus finally make Edge a better rival to Chrome and Firefox.
