NVIDIA used the CES 2020 show to announce what it calls “the world’s fastest esports display” which uses G-SYNC to offer 360Hz refresh rates.

The company says these screens are specifically targeted at esports to fight frame tearing, explaining that professional hardware can truly make a difference in games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Rainbow Six: Siege, Overwatch, and Fortnite.

“While esports pros previously accepted frame tearing on their display in order to avoid waiting for the next frame to update, with G-SYNC’s 360Hz and Variable Refresh Rate technologies, frames refresh so fast--in less than 3ms--esports pros can get both tear-free frames and incredibly low latency,” NVIDIA explained in a press announcement at CES.

Data published by NVIDIA to highlight the benefits of 360Hz screens over 60Hz reveal a 37 percent improvement in flick shot performance for the new-generation tech and a 4 percent boost over 240Hz.

“To put this into context, in the 2016 Summer Olympics, 1% determined the difference between silver and gold in both men’s and women’s 100m and 200m dashes,” NVIDIA says.

First 360Hz monitor launching later this year

To emphasize how big the difference between 240Hz and 360Hz really is, NVIDIA turned to n0thing, five-time CS:GO Champion, to test the new displays and determine the benefits of 360Hz gaming.

“When I switched between 240 and 360, I could immediately tell that there was a difference,” he said.

The first company jumping on the 360Hz bandwagon is ASUS. The ASUS ROG Swift 360Hz esports display comes in a 24.5-inch 1080p form factor, with further information to be provided closer to release date. But according to NVIDIA’s early figures, the ASUS monitor is six times faster than a regular monitor or TV as it can display frames every 2.8ms.

The ETA and pricing details haven’t been disclosed, however, NVIDIA says it will launch later this year.
