Data shows iPhone XR accounts for nearly 1 in 2 sold iPhones

New statistics provided by CIRP reveals that iPhone XR was the best-selling iPhone in Apple’s third fiscal quarter, with the 2018 iPhones accounting for no less than 67 percent of the US sales during the same period.

Specifically, 48 percent of the iPhones sales in the quarter were iPhone XR units, which means that the most affordable 2018 iPhone sold better than iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X combined in Q3 FY2018.

“iPhone XR has become the dominant iPhone model,” said Josh Lowitz, CIRP Partner and Co-Founder.

“Its 48% share of sales in the quarter is the highest we’ve seen for an individual model since the iPhone 6 in 2015, which shared top billing with the 6 Plus, but only had two outdated legacy models offered as alternatives. Apple set out to create a competitive model, with current features like a large screen on a midsize handset, at a price that falls near the leading Android phones.

iCloud dominating Apple services

CIRP also provides a look at sales of Apple Services, and unsurprisingly, no less than 48 percent of iPhone owners also purchased additional iCloud storage. By default, iCloud comes with 5 GB of free storage space, but nearly 1 in 2 iPhone users in the US pay for additional storage to move their backups, photos, and videos in the cloud.

Apple Music is particularly successful as well, as no less than 35 percent of the iPhone owners purchased a subscription too, while Apple Podcasts comes very close with 30 percent. Despite the criticism, Apple News is doing quite fine, reaching a 15 percent share in the Apple user base.

“Success in services has varied, depending on the competition and how much of a head-start Apple has,” said Mike Levin, CIRP Partner and Co-Founder. “For example, for a long time Apple had one of the only apps for podcasts, so its podcast app has the highest penetration for iPhone buyers. In contrast, Apple TV competes against Netflix and other streaming video services, and has lower penetration.”

Apple will unveil a new iPhone generation in September, with three models expected, all of them successors to the trio released in 2018.
