Apple could regain second spot thanks to the iPhone 8

Huawei has already announced that its primary goal is to overtake Apple in terms of smartphone sales across the world, and it turns out that this just happened, according to data offered by research firm Counterpoint Research.

While no specifics were provided in terms of sold units, a graph that Counterpoint released shows both Huawei and Apple have approximately 12 percent market share, with a huge growth for the Chinese firm in the last few months.

Huawei overtaking Apple isn’t such a big surprise given the lack of new iPhone models and the improvements that the Chinese firm introduced on its models, but the bigger challenge right now is to maintain this runner-up spot after the launch of the iPhone 8 next month.

“This is a significant milestone for Huawei, the largest Chinese smartphone brand with a growing global presence. It speaks volumes for this primarily network infrastructure vendor on how far it has grown in the consumer mobile handset space in the last three to four years.

The global scale Huawei has been able to achieve can be attributed to its consistent investment in R&D and manufacturing, coupled with aggressive marketing and sales channel expansion,” Counterpoint’s Research Director Peter Richardson said.

iPhone 7 number one device across the world

The bad news for Huawei is that the company does not have a single model in the top 10 smartphones in terms of global market share.

This is where Apple is the clear leader, as the iPhone 7 leads the charge with 4 percent, followed by the iPhone 7 Plus with 2.9 percent and Oppo R11 with 2.1 percent. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is fifth with 1.8 percent, while Apple is once again pretty close with another model, this time with the iPhone 6, which has a share of 1.6 percent.

Counterpoint says this only happens because Huawei has too many models on the market without a hero device, though the company could change this very soon with the unveiling of the Mate 10.
